5 Ways to Heat Up Your Backyard - Enjoy it During Winter

Baby, it IS cold outside.

We are approaching the peak of winter, and with last week's brutal storm over, we're hoping we won't have a repeat of what happened last year with that deep freeze. Afterall, Jersey is not too far away from the Great White North.

But let's face it, cold weather or not, at some point we WILL want to spend some time outside. So, how do we do that without freezing to death?

Let's go over 5 ways you can heat your backyard so you can enjoy the winter and your outdoor living space without turning to ice.

Gas powered space heater

These are excellent. You see them in cafe's, bistros, anywhere there is outdoor seating during the winter. They're also called 'patio heaters', and they really do actually keep you warm, as long as you're sitting close. Prices range from $200-$500 and up. These are great because you can move them around, and they're not fixed like a fireplace.

Outdoor Fireplace

Take the indoors, outdoors, with a masonry fireplace. These not only keep you warm, but they also add a lot of value and magic to your outdoor living space, giving it that 'dream house' look. The only downside is you'll have to wait while a builder makes it for you. Prices for these start at around $2000, and go up from there, depending on how grand you want to make it.

Fixed Fire pits

Mankind has been using fire pits to keep warm since the very beginning! A fixed firepit will be less expensive than an outdoor fireplace, and it will be faster to install, in fact, there are a lot of simple yet cool DIY masonry fire pit designs. So, this option is great if you want to get your hands dirty, save some money, and still have something effective and attractive.

Portable Fire pits

This is by far the most inexpensive option, and the fastest to setup (But not as fast as the patio heater). Prices go as low as $50. Keep in mind, that is for a wood-burning fire pit. Gas powered ones will cost more. Like the patio heater, the great advantage with these is that you can move them around to suit your needs for that day.

Chimineas

Think portable fire pit + oven. And yes, you certainly can ALSO cook on top of a fire pit, with the right accessories. The only difference with the chiminea is that you can also bake with it since they have a closable compartment. Prices are also very affordable: $150-$400.

There you have it! Five options for adding heat to your backyard space so you can enjoy it during the winter.
